Benefits of Dental Cleaning

Teeth start to grow in a baby’s jaw surprisingly early in pregnancy. Although they can’t be seen when most babies are born, beneath those bare gums are the buds of all of the baby teeth. In this article we will discuss facts that you need to know on how children’s teeth erupt and fall out.

Primary Tooth Eruption Facts

  • Every 6 month, approximately 4 teeth will erupt.
  • Girls generally precede boys in tooth eruption.
  • Lower teeth typically erupt before upper teeth.
  • Teeth that is located in both jaws usually erupt in pairs, one on the right and one on the left.
  • Primary teeth are typically smaller in size and whiter in color than the permanent teeth that will soon follow.
  • For children  2 to 3 years of age, all primary teeth should have erupted.
  • For children after age 4, the jaw and facial bones of the child begin to grow, creating spaces between the primary teeth which is a good natural growth process that gives the necessary space for the larger permanent teeth to emerge.

How The Teeth Erupt?

  • Baby teeth start to erupt and push through the gums when the baby’s about six months old.  The first baby teeth to erupt are the incisors, which are used for cutting and they are found in the front and center of the jaws.
  • Then, the first molars erupt followed by the canines and the second molars.

What Do Primary Teeth Do?

  • The function of these baby teeth are to serve as placeholders for the permanent teeth and to develop the structures of the oral cavity. Eventually, the roots of the baby teeth start to dissolve, this is perfectly natural and normal.

What are permanent teeth?

  • Next, the baby teeth fall out and make way for the permanent teeth. There are 32 permanent teeth.
  • The first to come are the six year molars, followed by the incisors, the canines, the cuspids and the second and third molars. These permanent teeth develop from the same tooth buds as the baby teeth.
  • Permanent teeth come in between the ages of six or seven and will continue until the person is in their early 20s.
  • Wisdom teeth are the third molars. Sometimes the jaw is not long enough for them to erupt properly. Some wisdom teeth do not erupt at all while others partially erupt or erupt on their sides. In this case, these teeth need to be taken out by the dentist because they can’t be cared for properly and invite harmful bacteria.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SEDATION?

  • Mild Sedation - Although cognitive function and coordination may be impaired, breathing and heart functions are unaffected. This is our offices goal with oral sedation.
  • Moderate Sedation - With moderate sedation, no intervention is required to maintain an open airway, spontaneous breathing is adequate, and heart function is usually maintained.
  • Deep Sedation - The ability to independently maintain breathing may be impaired requiring assistance to maintain an open airway. Heart function is usually maintained. This is the type of sedation being provided with in-office IV sedation.
  • General Anesthesia - The ability to independently maintain breathing is often impaired requiring assistance to maintain an open airway, and positive-pressure ventilation may be required because of depressed spontaneous ventilation or drug-induced depression of neuromuscular function. Heart function may be impaired. This is the type of sedation being provided in a hospital care setting.

Visit Sierra Springs Dental and we would be happy to provide mild, effective nitrous oxide sedation to help our patients of all ages receive the pain and stress free dental care experience that they deserve.

WHAT INVOLVED IN TOOTH RESHAPING AND DENTAL CONTOURING?

Dental contouring is performed using dental instruments and abrasion techniques. Before the reshaping, dental X-rays may be taken to ensure that your teeth are healthy. Teeth will be marked with a pen to highlight areas that need sculpting. To artfully eliminate or minimize imperfections on the surface of the teeth, a sanding instrument is used and sandpaper-like strips may be used to contour the sides of the teeth. Finally, the teeth are smoothed and polished.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN TEETH RESHAPING?
  • Dental contouring involves removing small portions of the tooth enamel to improve your smile.
  • The procedure is permanent and doesn’t usually require anesthesia or recovery time.
  • Because tooth enamel is so thin, reshaping results in subtle changes – it can’t realign teeth.
  • Your professional dentist will examine your teeth and diagnose how the reshaping will accomplish your goal of smile enhancement or correct a bite problem if you have one and to ensure that the teeth being reshaped will not only look better but also will be healthy.
  • Reshaping of the root surfaces is done to protect you from gum disease. An x-ray is required to isolate and protect the sensitive inner tissue which is the pulp.

You will probably feel some vibration as we gently sculpt your tooth or teeth, and then polish them smooth. Reshaping one tooth usually takes less than half an hour — and the results will be obvious as soon as you look in the mirror! Sometimes reshaped teeth can be a little sensitive to hot or cold after the procedure, but this should last no more than a day or two.
Come and visit our dentist offices and experience our tooth reshaping and dental contouring which is best for people who just need tiny adjustments or repairs to improve the look and feel of their teeth.

How To Have Sparkling White Teeth

One of the most requested dental procedures is teeth whitening. This goes to show you how much people want to have dazzling white teeth that accentuate their smiles. White teeth increase your confidence; helps make you relaxed and in some cases, can even get you employed. If you are prepping for that interview or getting ready for a photo shoot, follow the tips on teeth whitening below.

Visit the dentist on a regular basis

The general idea that people have is that they should only visit the dentist when there is a problem with the teeth. This is not how it should be. Visiting the dentist on a regular basis goes a long way in helping you know the state of your teeth. The regular checkups enable the dentist to give you advice on teeth hygiene and what you need to do to have whiter healthier teeth. Having the dentist professionally clean your teeth once in a while is a great way of having whiter teeth.

Change your toothbrush

It goes without saying that you will never have sparkling white teeth if you use the same toothbrush for a whole year. The brushing fibers grow old and lose their cleaning abilities after about two months. In addition, using the same toothbrush for a long time only serves to add the amount of bacteria in your mouth and you need to avoid this. For these two reasons, you will want to change your toothbrush at least once every two months. This is one of the most important tips on teeth whitening you need to follow.

Stop ignoring your tongue

If you spend twenty minutes brushing your teeth and ignore the tongue, you will not attain the quality of white teeth you want. The reason for this is that the tongue has its own plaque and if left, it gets transferred to the teeth you just brushed. The end result is bad breath and teeth that appear to be white but are paled by the plaque. To avoid this and have whiter teeth, buy a good quality tongue scraper and use it to remove tongue plaque after brushing your teeth and you will have the pearly whites you desire.

Learn to chew sugarless gum

Your saliva has natural anti-bacterial properties that help keep bacteria that cause plaque away hence keeping your teeth white. As you grow older, your salivary glands do not secrete enough amounts of saliva to clean your teeth. Chewing sugarless gum stimulates your salivary glands to produce more saliva and hence the natural cleaning action of saliva is restored resulting to whiter teeth.
